I had all intentions of using cloth diapers - after all, that is what my mother did! However, I soon realised that along with the initial investment of several hundreds of dollars, you still have to steam and hot wash the diapers several times - the amount of water and electricity needed, at the speed babies goes through diapers, it seemed to us to offset the whole initial idea. Besides, we were not sure we would have more children, and as full time working parents, it seemed quite a daunting investment.
Still I was determined to find the best solution - non-toxic, eco-friendly and biodegradable diapers and wipes!
We first used Seventh Generation diapers which are about 70% biodegradable. they are pretty good - but not perfect. During the night, my daughter would fill them so much that the diapers literally ripped apart when I changed them in the morning. They have since developed a night diaper.
But then... I found Nature Babycare. They are made from USA materials and assembled in Israel and they are almost 100% biodegradable. The sizing is slightly smaller than other diapers but they are sturdy and we even moved on to their pull-ups!
Their wipes are also biodegradable. We have used them, alternating with the Seventh Generation ones and they are equally available.
Something then ocurred to me... what is the point of having biodegradable diapers and wipe and throwing them into a plastic bag that is not... well, seek and you shall find. Nature Babycare has biodegradable plastic bags but we ended up using Natural Value Tall Kitchen Bags - they are 100% biodegradable and made in the USA! The good news is that there are several brands now!
